Fred D. Borrelli is the Developer and CEO of Scorpion Bay Hotel in Baja Sur, Mexico which he operates from the company’s US corporate office in La Jolla, California.
Born in Philadelphia in 1950, his skill as a spring board diver earned him a scholarship to the University of Southern California in 1968. In 1972, he graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and then earned an Executive MBA from Stanford University in 1980.
A noted hospitality industry executive, he has over 25 years’ experience in the field. Borrelli developed, owned and operated 17 high-end steak houses, employing over 1,000 across the west coast in California, Oregon, and Washington state.
In 2001, Borrelli launched the Scorpion Bay Hotel project, a boutique property catering to international travelers seeking secluded, premier surfing destinations.
From 2014-2016, he was General Manager of Black Dog Farms, a large vegetable growing agricultural company in Imperial Valley. Borrelli was recruited to develop an alternative growing system for produce to flat crops such as hay and Alfalfa, Sudan Grass, Kline Grass Bermuda seed.
Highly involved in community and civic activities, he supports organizations that encourage education, business, research and sports. He is currently Vice-President of La Jolla Youth, Inc.; on the Board of Directors for UCSD Athletic Board of Directors, and Lincoln Club of San Diego; Chairman of Directors Cabinet at Scripps Institute of Oceanography; Chairman/Founder of UCSD Cancer Center: Longboard & Luau; Board and House Chair for San Diego Yacht Club; Board Member/Membership Chair of the Restaurant Business Research Advisory, and Del Mar Fair Board- Don Diego Scholarship Foundation. Borrelli is a member of San Diego State University Alumni Association, Golden Triangle Chamber of Commerce, Greater San Diego Chamber of Commerce, Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce, Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce, International Special Events Society, National Association of Catering Executives, and the California Restaurant Association.
Numerous accolades have been bestowed on Borrelli including, Founder of E.W. Scripps & Associates (2001), La Jolla Youth Inc. Devoted Service Award (1999), Scripps Institute of Oceanography Guidance (1998), Cancer Center Leadership (1997), UCSD Generosity (1996), Coach of the Year (1995). In 1999, he was named Sergeant and given a Gold Star by the San Diego County Honorary Sheriffs Association. And, Borrelli was appointed by the Governor of California to the 22nd Agricultural Board: La Jolla Shore Planned District Advisory Board.
Borrelli resides in La Jolla, California with his wife, Nancy. Married in 1984, the couple has three beautiful daughters. He joined the Fusenot Foundation Board of Trustees in 2015.
